Geotectonic research is conducted at the Institute since the first days of its existence, although the organization was designed much later – only in 1953 the Department of Geotectonics and Geomorphology was created (with the geophysical laboratory) headed by Academician V.G. Bondarchuk (then the department reorganized structurally for many times with the release of separate parts as its individual subdivisions). Accordingly its name was changing. Since 2004 – it is a Department of Geotectonics and General Geology. Department carries out a systematic complex study of geotectonics of Ukraine, aimed at training first major summarizing scientific research in theoretical and regional tectonics that can create a scientific basis for the production of diverse geological prospecting and exploration works.

Now the Department of Geotectonics and General Geology has 11 employees, of which there are three doctors (T.P. Mikhnytska, V.A. Ryabenko, V.G. Verkhovtsev), five candidates (V.Ya. Radziwill, I.S. Potapchuk, M.M. Shatalov, I.M. Skopichenko, K.V. Ivanchenko) and three engineers (V.M. Makarevych and O.V. Tereshchuk and O.I. Karpenkova). The department also has two postgraduate students - O.V. Yatsenko and Yu.V. Yuskiv.

Achievements and the main results:

In theory:

- the development and further development of the tektoorogeny theory – whole doctrine of the unity of the origin and development of the structure and relief of the Earth's crust, the unity of the external (space) and internal (physical and chemical) geotectonic processes of the Earth, which allows to predict the genetic relationships between the different types of geological structures, and distribution of mineral deposits in them (Academician V.G. Bondarchuk and his followers);

- the development of the theory of fault-block structure of the crust, the establishment of a decisive role in its formation systems of regularly oriented faults, identification of the main geometric and structural-geological features of fault zones, definition of the role of rotational dynamics of the Earth in geological processes (Academician I.I. Chebanenko and his followers);

- knowledge about the structure of the lithosphere vortex systems arising under the influence of tidal deformations in the acceleration and deceleration of the Earth's rotation, and the presence of the excited electronic states in the crust, which is an energy basis of generally rock-forming tectonic processes (O.I. Slenzak).

In the area of regional geotectonics:

- There were made the summary maps of the location of zones of deep crustal faults of the territory of Ukraine and many other regions of the world. It was hold the tectonophysical interpretation of regional faults of Ukraine, that allowed to re-evaluate a number of data on the morphology, structure position and history of the fault zones, to establish structure-forming role of "primary" faults and their geochemical and ore specialization (I.I. Chebanenko);

- It was studied the structure of Ukraine's regions, different types of structures, their relationship, that greatly improved the structural basis of mineral prospecting and in some cases is the actual basis for the new and original theoretical results (in particular, the works of Yu.M. Dovgal, V.S. Tokovenko, V.Ya. Radziwill on Mountain Crimea and Scythian plate; M.I. Tripoli and A.Ya. Radziwill on the Donets Basin; V.P. Klochko, T.A. Znamenska on DDD; T.A. Znamenska, I.I. Chebanenko, T.P. Mikhnytska on Volyn-Podillya; V.A. Ryabenko, T.P. Mikhnytska etc. On Ukrainian Shield; M.M. Shatalov, I.S. Potapchuk, V.G. Verkhovtsev on Northern Azov);

- According the results of geological and geophysical study of the structure of the deep levels of the crust and lithosphere there were held paleotectonic reconstruction of large and medium-sized deep geotectonic elements, which are the root part of the surface structures of the platform part of Ukraine and its folded frame that exist at the present erosion cut. There were made the schematic maps of the structures of deep levels of the crust and tectonosphere. Comparative analysis of morphological types of structures of deep subsurface horizons showed that much of the structures at all hypsometric levels formed in a stable tectonic setting. Such structures are grouped into arrays with a thick layer of granite. They are separated by zones of subcrustal formations and coronary mantle mixture repeatedly recycled in the tectonic and thermal activation. The structures of this type are characterized by a considerable extent, the sharp increase of 10-12 km thick of crust and the morphological structure change with depth from the line to the cone-shaped, the wide lower part of which extends in the deeper horizons. At high levels of surface hypsometric development of structures such as lap was "depressed", a less pronounced because of the constant degradation processes that emerged during the Meso-Neoproterozoic i granite layer in the earth's crust. All these structures were and are very favorable for the penetration of fluids coming from the deep levels of the Earth, including hydrocarbons, into the higher layers of the crust. In these limits there were laid and formed paleorift structures of different ranks and ages, played a primary role in the development of the sedimentary cover with conditions favorable for the emergence of living organisms (T.P. Mikhnytska, V.A. Ryabenko, V.Yu. Radziwill, E.V. Ivanchenko);

- There is the intensive study of neotectonics of Ukraine on the basis of structural and geomorphic, aerospace, and other methods. There was made a map of recent tectonics of platform part of the territory of Ukraine of scale 1:500 000, there have been identified and fully considered active on the latest stage line (in terms of features divided into lineament zones 1st and 2nd-order and single lineaments, altogether comprising several mutually coupled systems of perpendicular linear structures) and ring (classified by type as morphogenetic as inherited and noninherited, buried, intermediate and rootless) geostructures; according the morphometric data (using the aerospace materials) there were set the total amplitudes of late Pliocene-Quaternary vertical crustal movements of platforms of Ukraine and some adjacent areas (Mountain Crimea, Carpathian). For the latest linear structures the expected morphological types and activation time were determined (within neotectonic stage) for circular formations the neostructural-geological interpretation was held. For all the latest identified geostructures the search perspective was evaluated. Based on the material it was held (mostly within reference sites): 1) large-scale forecasting and exploratory research on a number of mineral resources (oil, gas, fractured groundwater, some metals, placer diamonds, etc.), 2) identification of new structures and the safety evaluation of site for the nuclear power industry (especially the Chernobyl and South-Ukrainian APS), hydropower (Dnieper HPS) and oil and gas transportation systems (Kerch terminal some compressor oil and gas stations, underground storage of oil and gas products, etc.), 3) identification of the most active areas of the relationship of groundwater and surface water, and migration routes of pollutants of the APS areas in Ukraine, some chemical companies of Donbass, waste tailings (V.G. Verkhovtsev);

- The structural and geological features of dyke formations of Ukrainian Shield and associated minerals were studied (M.M. Shatalov);

- The deep magm controlling zones of Volyn-Podillya were highlighted. Their legacy development throughout geologic history, the processes of tectonic-magmatic activity, mineralization were established. The new structural framework for the metallogenic predictions was developed. The generalized evolution model of buried focal tectonomagmatic structures - the most typical representatives of this group was established. It was justified their high prospect for hydrocarbons (V.J. Radziwill);

- Place tectonic zoning of the northwest shelf of the Black Sea and adjacent areas by type of crust was conducted for the first time. The place of the tectonic and magmatic structures of different levels - the most perspective in the region structure of objects in different minerals (V.J. Radziwill);

- A map of the fault geostructures (FGS) of the Ukrainian Shield and its slopes of scale 1:500 000 was made. Reinterpretation of geological and geophysical data from the system approach and the structural-paragenetic analysis were used to identify the FGS as separate tectonic elements with lateral dimensions and deserve appropriate cartographic display. Structurally and morphologically they are expressed with concentrated linear accumulation of an echelon faults, crumple zones, crushing, fracture, followed by a process of dynamometamorphism, metasomatism, various secondary changes of deformed rocks and neoplasms (I.S. Potapchuk).

At present theoretical and regional studies develop mainly in the areas said above, with special attention to the study of different age zones of tectonic activity of geostructures of Ukraine, foresight of ecological geological processes, forecasting some minerals, the study of platform orogeny and conditions of formation of the sedimentary cover in the Ukraine.

The results of department workers research were reflected in a hundred of books, over a thousand of articles, several hundred drawn multiscale structural-geological and tectonic maps.
